Saint Dominic Savio: A Model for Young Pupils

Saint Dominic Savio: A Model for Young Pupils

Saint Dominic Savio (1842-1857) is an inspiring role model for all young schoolchildren.

From an early age, he demonstrated that it is possible to be both studious, kind, and faithful to one's values, even in a school setting. Through his behaviour in class and his relationships with his friends, he teaches us how to grow in goodness and in the love of God:

  • From a very young age, Dominic distinguished himself by his love for hard work and excellence. He understood that school was a place where one should grow not only in intelligence but also in virtue. From the age of five, he would accompany his father to Mass every morning, even in winter. His teacher recalled that he was always the first to arrive in class, waiting attentively for the lesson to begin. He often said: “Jesus and Mary will be my friends!” and made it a point of honour to work diligently to please them.
  • But Dominic was not only a dedicated student; he was also a generous and caring friend. One day, at Don Bosco’s school, a classmate was unjustly accused of throwing stones. Rather than denounce the real culprit and create conflict, Dominic chose to take the punishment in his place. When asked why, he humbly replied: “Jesus was wrongly accused, and he said nothing. I can bear this for him.” His courage and wisdom show that even a child can be a peacemaker in his school.
  • He was also a model of honesty and purity of heart. He refused to cheat, convinced that only personal effort leads to true success. When a friend offered to whisper an answer during an exam, he gently but firmly refused, saying: “No, I would rather fail honestly than succeed by cheating.” He encouraged his classmates always to tell the truth and act with integrity.
  • Despite his fragile health, Dominic remained joyful and kind, seeing each day as an opportunity to do good. He loved organising games and theatre performances but always reminded others that the most important thing was to remain in peace with God. When a friend asked him how to become a saint, he enthusiastically replied: “It’s very simple! Always be cheerful, do your duty well, and help others.”

His secret? His love for God and his unwavering trust in Him. He went to confession regularly, prayed with great devotion, and encouraged his friends to do the same. When he became gravely ill, he kept a peaceful smile and said to Don Bosco: “I see wonderful things!” before passing away at the age of 14.

Today, every pupil can be inspired by Dominic Savio to grow in hard work, generosity, and faith. He proves that holiness begins in childhood, in classrooms, in playgrounds, and in every small act of kindness. May his example continue to inspire young people to live with love, honesty, and joy, both at school and in their daily lives.
